Cooking is easy and fast when you have the right equipment and tools. With Christmas right around the corner, the kitchen is bound to be one of the busiest spots in the house this festive season! From Christmas dinners to New Year’s Eve parties, food is sure to be the highlight of the festivities!
Work through this list and make sure your kitchen is adequately stocked and ready for action – prepping and cooking Christmas dinner will be a breeze!

1. Food Processor

You might think that having a food processor might be a bulky equipment to have around at such a busy time – but the Cuisinart Mini-Prep® Plus Processor will come in handy when you’re prepping Christmas Dinner and snacks! Use it to make salsas, dips and more! The Mini-Prep® Plus is the perfect little helper for small food preparation, from chopping herbs or bread crumbs, to finely grinding hard cheese. Its versatility lies in the special Auto Reversing Smart Blade™, which makes it easier to process both soft and hard foods. Designed in Italy, the Mini-Prep Plus’ sleek touch pad controls afford easy cleaning and an elegant look.

Try your hand at these recipes with the Cuisinart Mini-Prep® Plus Processor: Wild Mushroom Soup, No Bake Mini Matcha Oreo Cheesecakes, Roast Pork Loin with Apple Chutney

2. Measuring Jugs

Now we know everyone has measuring cups & jugs, but the Jamie Oliver Tilt and Mix Bowls with Lid (Set of 3) eliminate the need for dirtying extra measuring cups, while their non-drip pouring spouts ensure that ingredients dispense neatly into muffin tins, bread pans, or cake pans. The set includes bowls in 1-liter, 1-3/5-liter, and 3-liter capacities, each of which features gleaming stainless-steel construction that work well for both wet and dry ingredients. Furthermore, the uniquely shaped bowls sport 45-degree non-slip silicone flat spots on their bases, which allow for tilting them comfortably to get at all the ingredients while whisking–no more clumps of flour or unmixed butter at the bottom. Best of all, the large 3-liter bowl comes with a tight-fitting polypropylene lid with a built-in spoon rest!

3. Chopping Board

Let’s talk turkey and other meaty fare. The redesigned Epicurean® Carving Board features a generous juice groove that easily collects drippings for gravy and sauces. It is a hearty board perfect for roasts, hams, and large birds – an absolute must-have to avoid ruining your countertop and any Christmas mishaps!

4. Meat Thermometer

When cooking in large quantities, uncooked meat is definitely one of the most common worry of home cooks. Forget charts, timers and  the poke test. The best way to guarantee that your turkey, chicken and other meats are properly cooked is to check its internal temperature. The Meat Thermometer from Cooper-Atkins is NSF® certified and includes a 6″” / 15.2 cm stem. It includes HACCP minimum temperatures for poultry, ground beef & pork, and fish for easy reference as well!

5. Pastry/Basting Brush

Don’t underestimate how useful a plain-looking pastry brush can be! Most commonly used for a quick egg-wash over pastries, the brush can also be used to grease pans with melted butter, or used to brush sauces or marinade on meat or fish. It can even be used to remove excess flour, salt or herbs from another surface if you had a shaker mishap! The Lacor Silicone Pastry Brush will do the job perfectly – the heat resistant silicone bristles on this pastry brush are designed to make brushing on butter and other sauces effortlessly and is easy to clean and odour-free!

6. Fine Grater

This little gadget is another absolute must-have in the kitchen! Use the Microplane Professional Series Fine Grater to grate horseradish over smoked salmon, lemon zest over your pies and more. While there’s no other tool that does such a fine job of turning thin citrus skin into beautiful, fragrant zests, there are a few more foods that it can handle with great finesse. The Microplane can turn a block of chocolate into beautiful flecks for garnishing pies and cupcakes. You can also run your cinnamon stick or other whole spices over the Microplane for a fragrant drink or dessert. It can also turn the flesh and seeds of a chilli or jalapeno pepper into tiny pieces so you just taste that mild kick in your food!

7. Balloon Whisk

A great whisk is a great kitchen essential – especially so with the holiday season coming up! The uses of a balloon whisk are not just used for whisking eggs and cake batter. It can also be used to whip cream, lightly mixing together dry ingredients in lieu of sifting, and even making your salad dressings! The User-friendly Magisso Balloon Whisk is easy to wash. The handle, held together by magnets, splits into two, unfurling the stainless steel wires so they can be thoroughly wiped and cleaned!

8. Blender
Having a blender not only whizzes up smoothies in no time, but it’s also a great equipment to have on hand to make spreads, soups, dips and much more! Cook homemade soups from start to finish or blend up your favourite smoothie with the Cuisinart Blend and Cook Soup Maker. The built-in non-stick heater plate provides the perfect surface to sauté ingredients, simmer or boil soups, and with a touch of a button blend it all to a perfect consistency. Crush ice and blend everything from smoothies to frozen cocktails.

Q: What is one of your favourite products that you like to use in the kitchen?
A: I probably use my chef’s knives more than any other tools in the kitchen. I don’t advocate any particular brand as long as they are sharpened regularly and properly.

Q: Christmas is right around the corner – what do you think would be the Ultimate Gift to give a friend who is a cooking enthusiast?
No matter how good a chef you are, it’s not good cooking for yourself; the joy is in cooking for others. Therefore I’ll choose a pasta maker – the best advantage of utilizing a pasta maker is that your pastas will at all times be fresh. This freshness will give them a sharper and more delicious taste. It is soft, chewy, supple, and the sauce simply clings to the pasta, coating it decadently and easily. In addition, you know what you add into your fresh pasta – including flavours like ground spices and herbs!

Fresh fruit of your choice (blueberries, bananas and strawberries are great)
Almonds or walnuts

2. Green Smoothies

Not used to having breakfasts? Try having a power-packed green smoothie instead. Sneak in green leafy vegetables with fresh fruits! Again, you can experiment with different vegetables and fruits to find your favourite combination. These are quick, packed with nutrients and so delicious! Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

LIQUID OF YOUR CHOICE (1.5 cups): Almond milk/coconut water/skim milk/regular milk/water
CHOOSE YOUR GREENS (1 big handful!): Spinach/Kale
PICK YOUR FRUIT (1-2 cups): Bananas/apple/berries/mangos/pineapples
PACK IT WITH SUPERFOODS: Chia seeds/flax seeds/nut butter/protein powder

Blend until smooth and your breakfast-to-go is ready! Use frozen fruits for a thicker smoothie, and add some chopped dates or a little honey for some added sweetness!

Lunch Time Warriors

Tired of the mid-day slump after having a heavy lunch? Avoid  carb-heavy foods that will leave you feeling sluggish and sleepy after your meal.

1. Grilled Salmon with Mint and Mirin Butter Sauce

Baked, seared, grilled or broiled, salmon is known to be heart-healthy. It is chockfull of Omega 3 fatty acids which is associated with better heart health and healthy skin. The protein found in salmon also helps the body maintain metabolism levels to promote weight loss – score! Simply grill some salmon and toss with your favourite greens for a nutritious, fuss-free meal. Try this Grilled Cajun Salmon and Vegetables for that little spicy kick and plenty of flavour!

2. Brown Rice Salad with Grilled Prawns

Brown rice is not only rich in anti-oxidants and promotes weight loss, but its high fibre content also aids in digestion! If you’re carb-lover like us, then this Brown Rice Salad with Grilled Prawns would make for a nutritious and filling lunch! This salad can be served hot or cold – perfect for packed lunches at work! Mid-day Munchies

Guilt-Free Dinners

1. One Pot Pasta

We all know the feeling of coming home after a long day of work, wishing there would be comfort food for dinner. But more often than not, we end up buying food from outside for convenience’s sake – the dishes aren’t going to do themselves after all. Try this quick and easy one pot pasta that comes together in less than 30 minutes! Substitute the linguine for whole wheat pasta or even brown rice for a healthier, filling dinner and throw in some lean chicken meat or ground turkey instead of sausages. Pack up the leftovers and you’ll have your lunch for the next day!

2. Yellow Earth Roast Chicken

This Yellow Earth Roast Chicken is a fantastic idea for a Sunday family dinner with a spicy kick. Feel free to add more vegetables to your liking. The vegetables soak up the juices of the chicken and are good to have even on its own!

5 Awesome Ideas for your CNY Reunion Dinner!

Swing into the year of the Monkey with a full (and happy!) stomach! If you are planning a homecooked dinner for the annual reunion dinner, here are five fun, easy and tasty ideas you can add to the table. There are great not only for reunion dinners; they would also work just as fine for CNY lunch and dinner gatherings. Enjoy!

1. Cheese Fondue Pot

We all love the myriad of ingredients at the steamboat table. From prawns to fish balls and dumplings and vegetables, there’s always something for everyone. Try having a mini fondue pot at the side where everyone can dip a little something in cheese! Or, if you’re up for it, it can even replace the steamboat. There’s no such thing as too much cheese, right? If you’re worried about not having enough dipping forks, you can also use bamboo skewers.

Want a more local taste instead? Try using Satay or Chili Crab sauce – the possibilities are endless! This would work great for any leftover ingredients as well. Ingredients can be as b asic of as fancy as you desire!

2. Make Homemade Meatballs and prepare your own Shabu Shabu Steamboat!

Steamboats are a quintessential Chinese reunion dinner where everyone gathers around the dinner table, sharing food cookied in a communal pot and having a table overflowing with different ingredients. Having a steamboat dinner is great; having two soup bases is even better, but a Shabu Shabu Steamboat with two soup bases takes it to a whole new delicious level!

Skip the store-bought meatballs for your very own homemade ones! Do you know water chestnuts add a nice crunch and texture to the meatballs? They are a cinch to prepare and also make for perfect dippers for a cheesy fondue pot! Learn to prepare these scrumptious meatballs and your own shabu shabu hot pot and you’ll be in business!

3. Get veggie-happy with a DIY Yu Sheng!

A must-have during CNY, Yu Sheng/Yee Sang is a Chinese-style raw fish salad that typically consists of strips of raw fish, mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments. The auspicious tossing of Yu Sheng, commonly referred to as ‘Lo Hei’, is a common tradition during CNY, symbolising abundance and prosperity.

Try a sweet and tangy version this year with this Chinese-Thai Style Fruit Yu Sheng! It can even serve as a colourful dessert after your reunion dinner.

Making your own traditional Yu Sheng means that you will be able to control what exaactly goes into it – cut the calories by using lesser plum sauce and crispy crackers! Check this recipe out for a healthier homemade version by the Health Promotion Board!

4. Wrap away with a Popiah Station!

Just like coffee, everyone likes their popiah made differently. Set up a popiah station as an appetiser before the reunion dinner and enjoy rolling them as a family! It can even be served the next day as the ingredients refrigerate well. Add as much or as little toppings as you like and make your very own signature popiah! Here is a great recipe to get you started:

5. Bake CNY goodies as a family!

Chinese New Year is all about bonding with friends and family, and not forgetting enjoying all the delicious food and snacks available only during this festive period! Learn to bake pineapple tarts, a festive favourite and bake them as a family after the reunion dinner. Some like more pineapple filling and less pastry, some prefer open-faced tarts – make the pineapple filling and dough beforehand and keep it in the refrigerator. That way they’ll be ready to go after dinner.
