Dining Table Decorating: Create the perfect tablescape

Have you ever wondered how much personality your dinner table gives off? Do your guests think of you as fun, quirky or boring when they leave your house? Much like an outfit, a dining table is a great way to express yourself! It can influence the entire dining experience, including the atmosphere, enticement of the food, along with showing your guests you appreciate their company. So if you are planning to  have a dinner or lunch party consider these elements to lift your party from a dull meal, to a spectacular soireé

Set the theme

It’s important to set the theme for your event, no matter how large or small the gathering. Whether you’re hosting a birthday party, barbecue or intimate luncheon, setting a theme will energise and captivate your guests. Create a consistent look from start to finish.

Curate your colour theme

Adopting a few key colours will help make your table look harmonious and balanced. Pick two to three complementary colours to create a cohesive table setting that is easy on the eyes. A dinner party over a holiday could suggest its own selection with gold flatware, red tinted glasses, and gold-rimmed dishware, plus accents of red in linens, the table centerpiece and accessories.

Shop: Tabletop Accessories

Blend the old with the new

Try mixing vintage and modern items. Using antique pieces will add charm to your setting and create talking points with your guests. Borrow your grandmother’s silverware and breathe new life with a modern dining set.

Shop: Nachtmann Drinkware

Plan a centrepiece

Bring out the beauty of your table settings by using a centerpiece to create a focal point. It could be a bouquet of nicely arranged flowers, candles, tabletop sculptures, twigs. Height is crucial, consider your guests’ line of sight – you want to make sure your guests can see each other across the table.

Shop: Natchmann Quartz Crystal Bowl

Select the right linens

If you like the idea of using a tablecloth for your dining table, a linen version is ideal for a look that’s well dressed but relaxed rather than overly formal. Runners themselves are a further option as table linens for a dinner party. Placing a row of runners across the table’s width can help encourage conversation between diners sitting opposite one another as well as those seated on the same side.

1. SALTED EGG YOLK

Just like parmesan, salted egg yolks are incredibly versatile. You can simply grate cooked egg yolks onto pasta, toast, or anything else you want to add a bit of oomph –the possibilities are endless! Salted egg yolk is everything we love in our food -savoury, sweet, with a lingering taste of umami.

Need an idea to get started? Try this Salted Egg Yolk Cookie recipe that melts in your mouth.

2. GULA MELAKA

Gula Melaka or palm sugar is a type of sugar made from the sap of flower buds from the coconut tree, caramelised by boiling at low temperatures. The sweet mild caramel flavour is used extensively in many desserts like ice kachang, chendol, ice cream or as a general substitute to sugar. This is a well-loved ingredient by many Singaporeans.

Sharing this drool-worthy No Bake Ondeh Ondeh Cheesecake recipe that will surely delight everyone. Yes, You can thank us later!

3. PANDAN

Pandan, also known as screwpine, is a tropical plant prized mostly for its long, palm-like leaves. Pandan has a fresh, floral, earthy smell and taste, almost like sweet grass. From rice dishes and curries to homemade kuehs and cakes, pandan lends its distinctive flavour to many perennial classics. This recipe for Kaya uses homemade pandan extract and creamy coconut milk which gives it a silky smooth texture, perfect for your Kaya Toast and soft boiled eggs.

Do you sometimes notice a bunch of pandan leaves inside the taxi? Cabbies use it as a cheap, efficient, and natural air freshener. It also acts as a cockroach repellent.

4. LEMONGRASS

Lemongrass, being a prized cooking ingredient has many health benefits. It helps to aid digestion, relieve headaches and boost one’s immunity. Often used in curries, 1 bulb (or two) is used in the paste, and another bulb is used whole and dropped into the curry to give it an additional fragrance.

How about baking this Lemongrass and Lime Madeleines, an Asian twist to the traditional French cake. Savour the fragrant aroma of the lemongrass as you bake and bite into a refreshingly light sponge that is sure to delight your palate

5. DRIED CHILLI

More chilli, please! Are you up for a fiery, spicy challenge? Chillies are also a good source of nutrients such as Vitamins A and C, as well as iron and potassium. The usage of dried chillies does not only makes the dish spicy but also provides a stronger taste and colour to the dish compared to fresh chillies.

Spice it up with this stir-fried Chinese dish that originated from Sichuan – Kung Pao Chicken. Try recreating this yummy dish in the comfort of your home and serve it with a bowl of rice, garnished with some green onions and sesame seeds.

Mid Autumn Special – Mooncake & Tea Pairing

< Back to Guides and Tips

Mooncake & Tea Pairing

Been indulging in too many mooncakes? Let us guide you on how to pair the right tea with the mooncake you are about to have. This not only brings out the taste of this delicacy, but it also balances out the richness of the pastry. Read on to find out what are the best tea accompaniments for the different types of mooncake:

1. Lotus Seed Mooncake

The ever-popular lotus mooncake is the representative of a Cantonese-style mooncake, a must-have for Mid Autumn Festival. Top-quality lotus seeds are sourced and processed to achieve a smooth and fragrant filling. To make it richer and savoury, salted egg yolks are added to give an aromatic taste.

Best Paired with: Oolong

Why: Mooncakes with salted egg yolks have a stronger and richer taste. The smoky and woody flavour from Oolong helps to bring out the fragrance of the lotus paste and salted egg yolks, at the same time balances out the delicacy’s sweetness.

2. Snowskin Mooncake

Originating from Hong Kong, snowskin mooncakes have become wildly popular across South East Asia. Unlike a traditional baked crust, the outer layer (crust) is made of glutinous rice that is preserved at a low temperature—which explains how the name came about. With a slightly chewy and stickier texture, some say it is pretty similar to a Japanese Mochi! Snowskin mooncakes can be filled with everything from lotus paste to fruits and even chocolate. Best served chilled.

Best Paired with: Green Tea

Why: Green tea has a light, bitter aftertaste that pairs well with these dessert-like mooncakes. For example, Houjicha, which has a roasted mellow profile, with low astringency pairs harmoniously and enhance the subtle taste of these non-baked snowskin mooncakes.

3. Teochew Flaky Yam Mooncake

Round, flaky mooncakes that are composed mainly of flour, shortening and sugar. This traditional delicate pastry is usually filled with a smooth and sweet yam paste. Wrapped in a thousand-layer pastry crust, this Teochew delicacy is best eaten warm by gently heating up in the oven.

Best Paired with: Jasmine Tea

Why: Flaky Yam mooncakes tend to be rich and heaty and it is recommended pairing them with a light and floral tea like Jasmine. It is the most famous scented tea in China which is made by infusing the tea leaves with the scent of jasmine blossoms which gives it its signature aroma.

4. Red Bean Mooncake

A traditional and nostalgic favourite of our parents! Filled with sweet red bean paste made from azuki beans, this mooncake has been always a sought-after flavour among mooncake lovers. Today, we see more bold and creative creations, for example infusing orange and lemon peel into it, giving the traditional flavour a new twist.

Best paired with: Silver Needle or White Peony tea.

Why: White tea is classified as a lightly fermented tea with very little or no fermentation at all, making it light, fresh and rich in anti-oxidants. The floral notes in both teas will mellow out the sweetness from the azuki beans.

5. Five Kernel Mooncake

As the name suggests, it is made up of five types of coarsely chopped nuts and seeds, held together with maltose syrup, giving it a thick and crunchy texture. Typically, they are made with almond, walnut, pumpkin seeds, winter melon seeds and sesame seeds. For that savoury bite, Chinese hard-cured ham and bits of pork fat are added into the filling too! Did you know that the assorted nuts and seeds represent the 5 moral standards of Chinese teaching: benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trust.

Best paired with: Pu’er Tea

Why: Pu’er is a variety of fermented tea produced in China’s Yunnan Province. A stronger tea helps to balance the heavy filling of nuts, seeds and sticky, sweet maltose syrup. Drinking Pu’er not only aids in digestion, but it also helps to breakdown fat content and lowers your cholesterol.
