The 7 most basic ways of cooking an egg

Don’t forget that these 7 ways of cooking an egg have varying levels of difficulty too despite being beginner friendly! Fear not, we have arranged them in order of difficulty, starting off with the 2 most basic ways of cooking an egg: Soft boiled and Hard boiled.

Soft Boiled Eggs

Soft boiling makes the yolk in eggs runny yet creamy, and eating it along with the delicate and soft egg white just makes it such a simple way of appreciating the natural flavours of an egg.

Basic equipment needed: Slotted Spoon, Saucepan

Hard Boiled Eggs

Love a good Egg Mayonnaise Sandwich? Hard boiling makes the yolks moist, deep orange and more solidified compared to soft boiled eggs. It also ends up with more chewy egg whites and a milder taste due to longer cooking times. It is crucial to not overcook hard boiled eggs as it may cause a reaction between the iron in the yolk and the sulfur in the egg whites which results in an odor.

Sunny-Side Up Eggs

Other than catching the beautiful sunrise on a monday morning, why not prepare some sunny-side up eggs to catch as breakfast too! OUR FAVOURITE TIK TOK RECIPES AND WHICH TO SKIP

Tik Tok came to our attention recently when a local Tik Tok influencer visited our parent company, Siahuat, and mentioned how it is the place to be if you want to meet hunky tattoo-clad Chefs. The post received 51.4K views, a modest number in comparison to the explosively popular Dalgona coffee fad but enough to leave our boomer board of directors bewildered. “What is this Tik Tok?” they asked. Well, we were happy to explain. Also, to clarify, ToTT has its fair share of hot Chefs visiting our stores now and then.

Tik Tok is not just a social media platform for Gen-Z and Millenials to showcase their dance moves, lip-sync to funny videos, or troll their friends. It also offers many ingenious food hacks and recipes. Who knew you could cook eggs to your preferred doneness in an Air Fryer? It is easy to see why Tik Tok food trends go viral and how it is changing food culture. However, with a plethora of food content posted daily on Tik Tok, it isn’t easy to differentiate which recipes are worth trying. Here are some of our favourite tried-and-tested recipes and which to skip.

FETA BAKED PASTA

The Feta Baked Pasta recipe is by far one of the best recipes on Tik Tok because it is so simple to replicate and taste delicious. Simply combine cherry tomatoes, a block of feta cheese, garlic, olive oil, and seasoning in a baking dish or a cast-iron casserole dish. Bake it in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 35 minutes. Once it is out of the oven, mix in a handful of herbs and ready-cooked pasta or cauliflower rice.

TORTILLA WRAP FOOD HACK

This culinary hack ensures maximum fillings with minimal leakage simply by strategically slicing a single cut from the centre of your Tortilla Wrap Hack to the bottom and folding it in quarters as you fill it with your favourite toppings. There are no right or wrong ingredient combinations; use any ingredients you prefer or leftovers from dinner. Fancy a Philly Cheesesteak wrap? Add sliced beef, cheese, onions and warm it up on a Griddler until it’s nicely toasted and oozing with melted cheese.

Recommended Product: Cuisinart Griddler

PANCAKE CEREAL

We love this Pancake Cereal recipe because it is too cute to pass up. This food trend makes coin-sized pancakes, which is brilliant because why have three pancakes when you can have 50 mini pancakes instead. And, it is the same amount of calories. While it was time-consuming to make mini pancakes and the texture was more crisp than fluffy, the Instagram-worthy shot we snapped afterwards made it all worthwhile. It helped that we used our Bruno Hot Plate for this culinary trend as it allowed us to make more mini pancakes simultaneously.

AIR FRYER PASTA CHIPS

If you’ve got the munchies, this out-of-the-box Air Fryer Pasta Chips might be for you, but we are going to have to sit this one out. The pasta chip didn’t crisp up evenly, and it was too carb-heavy for a snack.  Instead, we recommend a healthier alternative by slicing carrots, sweet potatoes or zucchini with a mandoline, sprinkling a little salt or grated parmesan, and popping it into your Air Fryer.R

Recommended Products: Cuisinart AirFryer Toaster Oven and Mastrad Multi Slicer Mandoline

POTATO CHIPS MASH POTATO

The Potato Chips Mash Potato food hack involves boiling a bag of potato chips until it turns into mush, then you add ingredients as you would for a regular mash potato recipe. Unless you live in a post-apocalyptic world where real potatoes are scarce, and you have to survive on processed food for rations, this food hack is a hard pass. It tastes as outrageous as it sounds. We recommend using an old-fashion potato masher and cooking mashed potatoes the traditional way.

Recommended Product: Zyliss Quick Masher

A Guide to Cheese Knives

A GUIDE TO CHEESE KNIVES

When you’re into cheese and entertaining, you will want the right cheese knives and tools to elevate the experience. From slicing and chunking to spearing and spreading, there’s a tool for every kind of cheese you encounter.

1. SOFT CHEESE

Brie and camembert lovers rejoice!

Take the oozy mess away with the proper type of cheese knife to prevent your favourite cheese from sticking to it. These delectable cheeses are known for their amazingly mild taste and creamy, moist, and buttery textures that just seem to melt in the mouth.

Boska Soft Cheese Knife Monaco+
Suitable for: Soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert.

Special characteristics: While the slim blade reduces resistance when cutting, this makes it easier for one to slice the  cheese as it does not stick and the shape of the cheese remains intact.

Boska Spreading Knife Monaco+
Suitable for: Spreadable cheeses like fresh cream cheese and soft goat cheese. Maximise the use of this knife by using it  for pâté, butter and pesto as well!

Special characteristics: As the blade can be bent, the knife will also slightly blend during the spreading. This makes spreading simpler.

2. SEMI-SOFT CHEESE

Semi-soft cheeses have a smooth, creamy interior with little to no rind. They are known for their high moisture content with flavour profiles that range from mild to pungent. Popular semi – soft cheeses are like Gouda, Port Salut and Provolone. These crowd favourites are great for slicing and snacking and make great additions to sandwiches and cheese platters. They melt beautifully, however their moisture content and relative softness can make them difficult to shred at room temperature.

Boska Semi Soft Cheese Knife Monaco+

Suitable for: Soft and semi-hard cheeses, like Gorgonzola and young Gouda.

Special characteristics: The holes in the blade reduce resistance when cutting and the cheese does not stick when you cut it while making sure the shape of the cheese remains intact.

Good to know: Prick a piece of cheese at the serving tip to serve it to someone, so you do not have to touch the cheese with your hands. Handy and hygienic!

3. SEMI-HARD CHEESE

A perfect balance of moisture and aridity, these cheeses provide a firm, slightly springy texture with a delicate blend of savoury and tangy flavours. Typically denser in consistency, the cheese is often made by compressing curds into a solid, draining them of any remaining whey in the process. Taken directly from their moulds, some cheeses (i.e. Edam and Jarlsberg) receive a coating of wax, thus avoiding the need for brine. Did you know that semi-hard cheeses are aged anywhere between 1 to 6 months depending on each specific type?

Boska Semi Hard Cheese Knife Monaco+
Suitable for: Semi-hard and hard cheeses like cured Edam and Cheddar.

Special characteristics: Use the serving tip to prick a piece of cheese to it. In this way you can serve cheese to someone without touching it with your hands. Extra hygienic.

4. HARD CHEESE

As the name suggests, hard cheese is firm as they are aged longer, and thus, has a lower moisture content.  Often savoury, popular hard cheese choices are Parmesan and Manchego. The labouring process of production of hard cheese begins with separating and draining most of the whey before pressing the curd, which is then either brined to create a hard rind or waxed.  Finally, the cheese is aged for between 2 to 36 months, and in some cases even longer. The length of aging determines the intensity of the flavour. A well-aged cheese will be more flavourful, less creamy and grainier in texture.

Boska Hard Cheese Hatchet Monaco+

Suitable for: Manchego and mature farm cheese
Special characteristics: This tool is very useful for removing the rind of the cheese

Also useful: Slide a piece you just cut from the cheese onto  the broad blade to serve someone without touching it with your hands.

Tricks and Tips to care for your Non-Stick Cookware

< Back to Guides and Tips

TIPS & TRICKS TO CARE FOR YOUR NON-STICK COOKWARE

1. USE ONLY SAFE UTENSILS

Avoid using metal utensils on your non-stick pans as they may have rough or sharp edges which can damage your pans. Use wooden or heat-resistant silicone utensils to protect and prolong your non-stick coating.

Recommendations:

2. USE LOW TO MODERATE HEAT

Too much heat on your non-stick frying pan can cause the non-stick coating to bubble and deteriorate its non-stick properties. As a guideline, use low to moderate heat and allow the pan‘s heat to rise to the desired temperature slowly. If you’re looking to sear, use a stainless steel or cast iron pan instead to achieve high temperatures and that perfect sear.

3. PREHEAT YOUR PAN

Using a fat like oil or butter before cooking helps the coating last longer but do avoid using cooking sprays. Using cooking sprays over time will cause residue to build up especially on the sides of the pan which is tough to remove and shortens the lifespan of the pan. Remember to first add the fat onto the cold pan before heating as the fats enhance the non-stick effects of the cookware. Most importantly, some non-stick pans can emit potentially toxic fumes when heated without a lubricant and this should be avoided.

4. USING FOR STORAGE

When you have finished your stir frys, use containers to keep your leftovers instead of storing  them on the pan. Food especially acidic ones can damage the coating when left for extended periods. Wash the pan with warm soapy water and a soft sponge.

Recommendation: Mastrad Stor’eat Smart Food Storage Box

5. CLEAN GENTLY

After use, let the product cool to room temperature before washing it with a soft sponge, plastic scrub or washcloths with warm, soapy water. Avoid using steel wool, stiff bristle brushes or scouring pads as they may scratch and damage the non-stick coating. If you have food residues that are stuck to your pan, let it soak in water for to help loosen the hardened bits before cleaning. The cookware must always be completely clean and dry before it is put away.

6. PROPER STORAGE

Proper storage is also an integral part of the overall maintenance of your non-stick cookware. When nesting non-stick pans, insert a paper napkin or tea towel between them to keep the bottom of one pan from scratching the non-stick coating of another.
